Better than Sliced Bread

By Wayne Robbins

The Enduring Word of God

We have all probably heard the saying, “The best thing since sliced bread.” But one thing that existed long before sliced bread is the eternal Word of God. 1 Peter 1:25 reminds us, “But the word of the Lord endures forever. Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.” The Word of God is unchanging and everlasting, offering nourishment for our souls far greater than anything this world can provide.

Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone

Jesus Himself emphasized the superiority of spiritual sustenance over physical bread when He said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God” (Luke 4:4). Yet, many today treat the Word of God as optional, choosing only the parts that suit them or ignoring it altogether. But if our hope is to dwell in heaven for eternity, we must live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). God's Word provides eternal nourishment, unlike physical bread, which can only satisfy temporarily.

The Bread of Life

Jesus declared in John 6:35, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” While physical bread sustains our bodies, Jesus, the Bread of Life, sustains our souls. Through Him, we find eternal satisfaction and fulfillment that no earthly substance can provide. The Israelites received manna from heaven, but Jesus offers something far greater—the true bread that gives life to the world (John 6:48-51).

Spiritual Feasting Together

As believers, we are called to feast on the Word of God and grow in our knowledge of Him. 2 Peter 3:18 urges us to, “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” This growth comes through studying and meditating on Scripture, allowing it to shape our lives and guide our steps.

God’s Word Provides Eternal Life

Physical bread can sustain life for a time, but only the Word of God leads to eternal life. Jesus explained in John 6:63, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” The Bible also compares the Word of God to a lamp for our feet and a light for our path (Psalm 119:105), guiding us through life and toward our eternal home.

An Invitation to Feast

Let us come together and feast on the Word of God, opening the Scriptures and drawing closer to Him. As Psalm 34:8 invites us, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” Through the Word, we experience the goodness of God and find the strength to live lives pleasing to Him.

God’s Word is far better than sliced bread. It endures forever, provides eternal nourishment, and brings us closer to our Creator. Let us open the Word, feast on its truths, and grow in grace and knowledge together. As we do, we will find satisfaction that surpasses anything this world has to offer, trusting in the One who is the Bread of Life.
