History of the local church in La Vernia:

One hot Sunday morning in August of 1988 four families met to discuss the need for a local church in La Vernia. Prior to that these families had been driving to Stockdale, Texas to meet with the local church there . A month later another meeting was held at the home of Lynn and Marilyn Norman. Around this time a missionary friend, Johnny Perkins, agreed to help the families in this planning effort.

The plans became reality on Sunday, October 2, 1988. 50 Christians met at the “Pizza Barn” at the corner of Loop 321 and FM 775. This was the first meeting of the La Vernia church of Christ. Harold Johanson preached the first sermon in the first assembly. Four months later the congregation moved to its present location on Industrial. On June 5, 2011 three elders were installed (J.R. Baker, Keith Johanson, and Tom Miller). They continue to serve to this day.

Several members have served as part-time preachers:

  • Bill Hawood

  • Hardy Cannon (died 2005)

  • Cecil Hamedy

  • Earl Hardin

  • Ed Tatum

  • Max Tarbet (12 years)

Several fellow Christians have also rotated giving sermons to the congregation – these individuals included: Keith Johanson, Lynn Norman, and Jimmy Simmons.

Curtis Wubbena was the first full-time minister of La Vernia Church of Christ in January of 2013.

Wayne Robbins started as full-time minister of La Vernia Church of Christ in February of 2018.
